Preventative Care Starts with Routine Care
Staying healthy equals keeping up on your preventative care. Pelvic exams, pap smears, breast exams, and STD testing are essential tests to help keep you well everyday. Often, we place our busy schedules, careers and families before our own health. We aim to remind our patients that focusing on your health can enhance your wellness and your relationships all year long.
Preventative Care Services We Offer
A pelvic exam is a routine procedure that includes a pap smear. Pelvic exams aim to determine if any changes to your reproductive organs have occurred. A pelvic exam includes an external and internal portion to determine the health of the vulva, ovaries, vagina, fallopian tubes, rectum and bladder.
Pap smears are one of the least invasive methods of determining pre-cancerous and immunological changes to cells along the cervix and help save many lives. Cervical cancer can almost always be prevented with regular screenings. When caught early, cervical cancer typically responds well to treatment.
We suggest performing pap smears for women ages 21-65 every three years. Even if you are not menstruating, we still suggest a pap smear. If you have had a hysterectomy, we will determine if you will still benefit from a pap exam.
Your pap smear will be performed during your pelvic exam by inserting a thin stick into the vagina to retrieve cells. The cells will then be examined to determine if any pre-cancerous cells exist. We will discuss any unusual findings with you.
Breast exams & screenings
Breast screenings save lives. At your regular visit, we will perform a visual and palpatory examination of your breast tissue to discover any lumps or bumps that may be present. Menstruating women should also perform an at-home breast exam just after their period and non-menstruating women should perform one on the same chosen day each month.
This will also help determine when your first mammogram will be appropriate. Mammograms are an x-ray of the breast to determine any changes to tissue or allow us to see the presence of lumps. Mammograms are essential in breast cancer screenings and recommended regularly for women over 40.
As a precaution, we will test for common sexually transmitted diseases. At your visit, we will discuss your lifestyle, answer any questions you have concerning STD prevention and evaluate any concerns you may have. If you are experiencing fatigue, fever, nausea, have noticed bumps or potential warts, are experiencing any abdominal pain or irregular discharge or itching, please let us know at your visit so we can determine which tests will be best for you. STD testing is performed partially during your pelvic exam with visual and palpatory examination as well as via blood testing.
We are happy to provide reminders to our patients so everyone can stay on top of their routine exams. Call us today to schedule your annual exam or request an appointment through our patient portal if you are an existing patient.
